About Us
We are a collective of LGBTQ+ scientists across multiple disciplines at The Georgia Institute of Technology and neighboring institutions. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for aspiring, high school aged, future scientists to come to a FREE event where they can meet LGBTQ+ scientists, try hands-on and interactive demonstrations, and find their passion for in STEM related fields!

Team
Dr. Julie Johnston (she/they) is a postdoctoral researcher focused on environmental microbial community dynamics cleaning your poo (wastewater!). She founded the original Queer Science at the University of Minnesota during her PhD, and is excited to bring outreach to her new home in Atlanta. They live with their adorable husky mix dog Harper and can be spotted in the wild across Atlanta’s many coffee shops and bookstores.
Dr. Andrew McShan (they/them) is an Assistant Professor in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Tech. They’re the faculty advisor of Queer Sciences. Dr. McShan runs a research lab that focuses on using biochemistry and biophysics to understand how proteins of the immune system function to help develop new drugs against cancer and pathogen infection. In their spare time, they love to partake in spontaneous adventures, make curated Spotify playlists, and play musical instruments.
Cynthia Baseman is a PhD student in human-centered computing. They specialize in human computer interaction, designing mobile health systems to address gaps in chronic care and mental health management. They love music, reading (especially queer horror), and playing games (Codenames or Overcooked, anyone?).
Amanda West (she/her) is a 4th-year PhD student in electrical engineering delving into the intricacies of supercritical carbon dioxide viscosity as an National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Amanda is passionate about ensuring minority communities on campus are welcoming for graduate students. When she’s not immersed in her research or cultural clubs, you can find her dancing, biking, or simply enjoying a good song.
Kai (he/they) is a recent undergraduate (Vassar 23′) from California. He wants to be a marine biologist and loves all marine invertebrates. He currently works at the Bhamla Lab on making robots out of amphibious insects.
Conlain Kelly (They / Them) is in the 5th year of their PhD studying Computational Science and Engineering, specifically the intersection of Machine Learning and Materials Science. They are a proud cat parent and like to cook, hike, and bike.
Yun-Feng Lo (He/Him) is a third year PhD student in ECE at GT, doing research in molecular communications, quantum Shannon theory and applied mathematics. He is a foodie and a big fan of musicals and good movies
Aryaman Jha (he/him) is a PhD candidate in the School of Physics at GT. He is interested in how simple rules lead to very interesting and beautiful patterns and ‘complexity’ in nature. He likes making art, hanging out with friends and traveling to places when he can
Nolan Barrett (he/him) Marine Chemical Ecologist- So one day, a marine biologist, a chemist, a plant/mushroom/bug collector, a chef, and a long-time Ultimate Frisbee player sit down at an Italian restaurant and order chicken cacciatore…that’s the punchline! Sigh…there he goes again…Nolan is bursting with terrible puns and dad-jokes as he shares his passions for ocean sciences and chemistry with friends and strangers alike. Please laugh!
Matthew Landen (he/him) is a Computer Science Ph.D, student studying cybersecurity. In research, he applies Machine Learning to detect cyberattacks. Outside of school, he loves acting in and going to watch musicals.
B (they/them) is a first year Aerospace Engineering Master’s student in the Space Systems Design Lab doing research on CubeSats at Georgia Tech. In their free time they like reading, writing poetry, and spending time in green spaces!
Sophie Nguyen (she/they)
Juniper Sloman (she/they) is a 5th year Materials Science and Engineering major and Environmental Science minor at Georgia Tech, focusing on polymer waste solutions and environmental stewardship. She enjoys reading, going to concerts, and being active in the Jewish community
Dr. Izzy Grosof (they/them) is a postdoctoral researcher focused on queueing theory – the mathematics of not waiting in line for too long. Proving theorems is a ton of fun! Outside of work, they enjoy blogging, programmatic artwork, and Dungeons and Dragons.
Jim Choncholas (he/they) is a computer science PhD student at Georgia Tech interested in privacy preserving computation, cryptography, and secure systems. In his free time, he likes spicy food, anime, and K-dramas.
Dr. Dustin Huard (he/him). I’m a Research Scientist II in the Lieberman lab in the School of Chemistry & Biochemistry. I’m a structural biologist, and a major interest of mine is connecting protein structure with (dys)function such as characterizing proteins that are involved in myocilin glaucoma, Gaucher and Parkinson’s diseases, and even novel clathrate binding proteins!
and many many more… (we’re trying so hard to update this!)
